Empowering Lismore Residents to Prepare for Floods
Lismore residents experience frequent flooding with limited access to clear, real-time information. There is a need for a stronger, more sustainable approach to disaster preparedness that helps residents act early and stay safe during flood events.
I designed a mobile app for Resilient Lismore to help residents prepare for floods by delivering real-time local alerts, actionable next steps and essential information up to the point of evacuation. The user journey was intentionally structured to guide residents from receiving alerts to understanding what to do and how to prepare, ensuring clarity and focus during critical moments.
A clean, minimalist interface presents information in clear, sequential steps, reducing cognitive load while maintaining access to all necessary details. This design approach helps users process information calmly, make informed decisions and build confidence in their ability to respond effectively during flood events.
Special thanks to Amy Wang and Emma Burns on collaborating on research for this project.
Research process
Following the most catastrophic flood event
in 2022, the NSW government Flood Inquiry highlighted the urgent need to strengthen disaster preparedness. In alignment with this recommendation, our solution is to design to enhance Lismore’s readiness for future floods.
We concluded through our research that residents need a reliable platform to access critical information during flood events. When government help and emergency services were overwhelmed, community-led rescues were critical, highlighting the power of local knowledge and rapid grassroots action (ABC News, 2022).
We started to design solutions for the following situation: when heavy rain is forecasted, residents need clear, timely updates on their flood risk so that they can prepare up to the point of evacuation.
Initial ideation for mobile solution
Based on the user flow and information architecture, the key features of the “Alerts” tab will include the following information:
- Latest news information on floods and warning levels from local government
- Notifications of local news reports and hazards
- Community posts by users that can be utilized to communicate, share information and ask for help from the community
Drawing on creative director’s feedback from user research and interviews, I re-evaluated and redesigned the journey and interface to address existing gaps.
While the initial ideas was to create a platform for residents to communicate with each other during crisis, I decided to emphasize focus on the Alerts feature to align with the overall design goals and user needs.
Final prototypeWhen a user receives a push notification, it triggers an in-app notification of a flood warning. The user is provided with details of the warning and resources on how to prepare and share the information with others. The user can personalize flood warnings and notifications based on their preferences so that it does not overwhelm the user in times of crisis.
