Empowering USYD students to make sustainable choices

At the University of Sydney, how might we reduce the use of single-use drink containers on campus? Through user interviews, one clear insight emerged: students genuinely want to make sustainable choices, but not at the cost of convenience.

I designed a mobile experience that makes sustainability the easiest option. Integrated into the University of Sydney Union (USU) app, the solution allows students to order their coffee, collect it, and return reusable cups seamlessly. After placing an order, users receive a QR code and PIN, which they scan at a pickup locker to collect their drink without waiting in line. When finished, they scan again at a return locker to drop off the cup quickly and effortlessly.

The result is a system that encourages higher reusable-cup usage and timely returns while keeping the experience quick, intuitive and rewarding. By combining convenience with visible impact, USYD students are empowered to make sustainable choices every day.

Case study coming soon. Special thanks to my research collaborators on this project.
